Delicious’ first project trip: Lisbon (Portugal) Part II

This time, our team travelled to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal to learn more about its delicious gastronomy. If you want to read about Lisbon’s street food and main dishes, click here.

Apart from visiting the main venues and trying the most well-known recipes from Portuguese cuisine, they took the time to visit two of the schools which are case studies at DELICIOUS project. They saw the facilities, visited the school canteen and the kitchens to have an idea of the daily life on each of them and how they can help.

Maristas Lisbon

Entrance to the school

Located outside the city center of Lisbon, Maristas Lisboa offers education for pre-school children, primary school children and secondary school adolescents. They count on several sport facilities as well as a school garden to watch vegetables and fruits grow. Tomatoes, different trees, sunflowers… This is a good way for children to learn more about the food cycles and to appreciate the value of primary ingredients.

There was also time to visit the canteen and talk to the kitchen staff as they were cooking the daily menus. Meat stews, salads, vegetable soups, rice, fish or cabbage and fruit or pudding for dessert were present during the team’s visit. This shows that Lisbon’s food which can be found in restaurants and shops, can be found in other forms, too, in school canteen menus.

Maristas Carcavelos

The second case study we show you today is Maristas Carcavelos. This school is located heading west and it doesn’t belong to Lisbon’s district, but to Parede, not too far from Lisbon. Like the other school, it counts on several sport facilities for physical activity classes and a big school garden with lost of veggies growing throughout every school year.

Maristas Carcavelos also counts on a student’s canteen and kitchens, which DELICIOUS team visited, finding similarities with Maristas Lisboa in the menus.

The menus from Maristas Carcavelos include a vegetarian option as a main course everyday as well as dishes consisting on meat or fish with veggies and stews; also, there is a diet option for those who prefer lighter versions of the same food.
